Building Safe and Responsible Hunters

Monmouth Fish & Game is proud to host Maine Hunter Education programs in cooperation with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

Hunter Education is about much more than meeting the requirements for a hunting license. These programs provide the foundation for becoming a safe, ethical, knowledgeable, and responsible hunter.

Courses combine classroom education with practical instruction covering topics such as hunter responsibility, wildlife conservation, outdoor safety, equipment, Maine hunting laws, and the safe practices every hunter should understand before heading into the field.

For many participants, Hunter Education is their introduction to a lifelong connection with Maine’s woods, waters, wildlife, and outdoor traditions.

Firearms Hunter Safety

The Firearms Hunter Safety Course introduces new hunters to the knowledge and skills necessary to safely participate in hunting with firearms.

Students learn the fundamentals of firearm safety, including safe handling, proper loading and unloading, safe transportation and storage, ammunition, hunting practices, and how to identify and avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Instruction also addresses hunter ethics and responsibility, wildlife identification and conservation, Maine hunting laws, survival and outdoor preparedness, and the importance of making responsible decisions before, during, and after a hunt.

The goal isn’t simply to complete a course—it is to help participants develop the knowledge, judgment, and safety habits that will remain with them throughout their hunting lives.

Archery Hunter Safety

Our Archery Hunter Safety programs provide new bowhunters with the knowledge and preparation needed to safely and responsibly participate in archery hunting.

Participants learn about bows, arrows, and related equipment; safe equipment handling; proper shooting practices; shot placement; wildlife identification; tracking and recovery; hunter ethics; outdoor preparedness; and Maine’s hunting laws and regulations.

Archery hunting presents its own unique challenges and responsibilities. This course helps participants understand those challenges while developing the skills and judgment needed for an ethical and responsible hunt.

Courses are offered periodically based on instructor availability and demand.
