Education has always been an important part of the mission of Monmouth Fish & Game. We believe that providing quality education and hands-on training helps create safer, more knowledgeable, and more responsible hunters, shooters, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Throughout the year, Monmouth Fish & Game hosts a variety of educational programs for people of all experience levels. Some are designed for individuals taking their very first steps into hunting or shooting sports, while others help experienced participants develop new skills and become more confident in the field.
Many of our programs are offered in cooperation with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (MDIFW) and other recognized organizations and experienced instructors.
Whether you’re preparing for your first hunting season, interested in learning how to safely handle a firearm, looking to improve your marksmanship, or hoping to expand your outdoor skills, we invite you to learn with us.
Many of our educational programs are open to the public, and club membership is not required to participate.
Maine Hunter Education
Building Safe and Responsible Hunters
Monmouth Fish & Game is proud to host Maine Hunter Education programs in cooperation with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
Hunter Education is about much more than meeting the requirements for a hunting license. These programs provide the foundation for becoming a safe, ethical, knowledgeable, and responsible hunter.
Courses combine classroom education with practical instruction covering topics such as hunter responsibility, wildlife conservation, outdoor safety, equipment, Maine hunting laws, and the safe practices every hunter should understand before heading into the field.
For many participants, Hunter Education is their introduction to a lifelong connection with Maine’s woods, waters, wildlife, and outdoor traditions.
Firearms Hunter Safety
The Firearms Hunter Safety Course introduces new hunters to the knowledge and skills necessary to safely participate in hunting with firearms.
Students learn the fundamentals of firearm safety, including safe handling, proper loading and unloading, safe transportation and storage, ammunition, hunting practices, and how to identify and avoid potentially dangerous situations.
Instruction also addresses hunter ethics and responsibility, wildlife identification and conservation, Maine hunting laws, survival and outdoor preparedness, and the importance of making responsible decisions before, during, and after a hunt.
The goal isn’t simply to complete a course—it is to help participants develop the knowledge, judgment, and safety habits that will remain with them throughout their hunting lives.
Archery Hunter Safety
Our Archery Hunter Safety programs provide new bowhunters with the knowledge and preparation needed to safely and responsibly participate in archery hunting.
Participants learn about bows, arrows, and related equipment; safe equipment handling; proper shooting practices; shot placement; wildlife identification; tracking and recovery; hunter ethics; outdoor preparedness; and Maine’s hunting laws and regulations.
Archery hunting presents its own unique challenges and responsibilities. This course helps participants understand those challenges while developing the skills and judgment needed for an ethical and responsible hunt.
Courses are offered periodically based on instructor availability and demand.
Maine IFW Next Step Programs: Take Your Outdoor Skills to the Next Level
Completing Hunter Education is an important beginning, but there’s always more to learn.
Monmouth Fish & Game is pleased to host Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Next Step Programs. These programs are designed to bridge the gap between basic Hunter Education and practical experience in the field.
Next Step programs provide participants with opportunities to learn from knowledgeable instructors, ask questions, develop practical skills, and gain greater confidence before putting those skills to use on their own.
They can be particularly valuable for new hunters who have completed Hunter Education but may not have an experienced hunter or mentor available to help them take that next step.
Big Game Hunting
The Big Game Hunting Next Step Program builds upon the basic knowledge introduced during Hunter Education and takes a closer look at preparing for and participating in a successful big game hunt.
Participants may explore topics such as planning and preparing for a hunt, choosing appropriate equipment, understanding habitat and animal behavior, scouting, hunting strategies, shot placement, tracking and recovery, field care, and ethical decision-making.
The program also provides an opportunity to discuss many of the practical questions that new hunters encounter as they prepare to head into the woods.
Our goal is to help participants move from simply understanding the fundamentals to feeling better prepared and more confident when they begin hunting independently.
Introduction to Shotguns
The Introduction to Shotguns program offers participants an opportunity to become comfortable with shotguns in a safe, supportive, and educational environment.
The course introduces the different types of shotguns, gauges, ammunition, basic shotgun operation, safe handling, loading and unloading, proper stance, mounting the shotgun, sighting techniques, patterning, and fundamental shooting skills.
Participants also learn how shotguns differ from rifles and handguns and how they are commonly used for hunting and recreational shooting activities such as trap shooting.
Whenever possible, classroom instruction is followed by supervised hands-on range experience, allowing participants to put what they’ve learned into practice with assistance from experienced instructors.
The program is an excellent starting point for someone considering upland bird hunting, waterfowl hunting, turkey hunting, recreational clay shooting, or simply wanting to become more familiar with shotguns.
Introduction to Firearms for Women
A Comfortable Place to Learn
Monmouth Fish & Game periodically offers an Introduction to Firearms for Women, designed especially for women with little or no previous firearms experience.
We understand that learning about firearms for the first time can sometimes feel intimidating. This program is designed to remove that pressure and provide a welcoming environment where participants can learn at their own pace, ask questions, and become comfortable with firearms under the supervision of experienced instructors.
The day begins with an emphasis on the fundamentals of firearm safety. Participants learn about different types of firearms, how they operate, ammunition, safe handling, loading and unloading, range procedures, proper grip and stance, sight alignment, trigger control, and basic marksmanship.
After establishing those fundamentals, participants have an opportunity for supervised, hands-on range instruction. Instructors work with participants to reinforce safe practices and help them become increasingly comfortable and confident.
No previous firearms experience is necessary.
The program isn’t about competition, speed, or how well someone shoots. It’s about providing women with the knowledge and experience necessary to safely and confidently understand and handle firearms.
Questions are encouraged, and beginners are welcome.

Project Appleseed
Marksmanship, Heritage & American History
Monmouth Fish & Game is proud to serve as a host location for Project Appleseed events.
Project Appleseed is a nationwide program that combines traditional rifle marksmanship instruction with stories about America’s early history and the events surrounding April 19, 1775.
Appleseed events provide participants with intensive instruction in the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship. Participants learn and practice skills including safe rifle handling, proper shooting positions, sling use, sight alignment and sight picture, breathing and trigger control, natural point of aim, and techniques for developing greater accuracy and consistency.
One of the strengths of an Appleseed event is its focus on fundamentals. Rather than simply firing rounds downrange, participants learn why particular techniques work and how to recognize and correct problems with their shooting.
The instruction is designed to accommodate a broad range of experience levels. Newer shooters can develop a strong foundation, while experienced shooters often discover techniques that help refine skills they’ve already developed.
But Project Appleseed is about more than marksmanship.
Throughout the event, instructors share stories about the people, choices, and events surrounding the opening days of the American Revolution. These historical presentations provide context for the events at Lexington and Concord and encourage participants to learn more about the nation’s founding and the responsibilities of citizenship.
Hosting Project Appleseed allows Monmouth Fish & Game to bring together marksmanship, education, history, and community in a unique learning experience.
Education for the Next Generation
Preserving Maine’s Outdoor Traditions
Maine has a rich tradition of hunting, fishing, shooting sports, conservation, and outdoor recreation. Maintaining those traditions requires more than simply passing them from one generation to another—it requires teaching people how to participate safely, ethically, and responsibly.
That’s why education remains an important part of what we do at Monmouth Fish & Game.
Through Hunter Education, IFW Next Step programs, introductory firearms training, Project Appleseed events, and other educational opportunities, we hope to give people the knowledge and confidence they need to safely enjoy Maine’s outdoor heritage.
We especially encourage young adults, families, new hunters, beginning shooters, and people who may not have grown up around hunting or shooting sports to explore the programs we offer.
You don’t need years of experience to get started.
You simply need a willingness to learn.
